Shanghainese (Mandarin: 上海話, Romanized Shanghainese: Zã́w-hae h’áe-h‘uo), is spoken by an estimated 14,000,000 people in Shanghai City and the surrounding area and also spoken by Shanghainese overseas communities living in countries outside China. Shanghainese is a northern dialect of the the Wuu Macrolanguage family of there is a spectrum of limited intelligibility amongst them.

Although Shanghainese is a tonal language, it has the "Tone Sandhi" feature where the tone is usually spoken on the first syllable of every word and the subsequent syllables of that word are spoken with a 'neutral' tone.

If you input Chinese Han character text, you get Latin conversion in the Shanghainese romanized text.

Important Notes (please read only if you are visiting Shanghai):
*Unlike Mandarin and other Sinitic languages which have a "standardized" and/or widely used Romanized orthography, there is currently no standardised Shanghainese Romanized orthography. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT SHANGHAINESE IS INCAPABLE OF BEING WRITTEN IN THE LATIN ALPHABET. It just means each and every author has (historically speaking) compiled their own separate romanization of Shanghainese.
*Unlike Europe, the Shanghainese language is NOT currently taught as a subject in primary nor secondary schools in Shanghai. Therefore do not automatically expect the local residents to be able to read and write in their own language.
*Of the Shanghai population of 24 million, only 14 million are the local Shanghainese inhabitants; the other 10 million residents had migrated / moved to Shanghai from other Provinces/cities of China for work purposes and therefore have zero knowledge of Shanghainese.
*Therefore this tool is for foreigners to converse with the 14 million local indigenous Shanghainese residents who are capable of speaking and understanding the Shanghainese language. (For the other 10 million non-local Chinese residents living in Shanghai, please converse with them in Mandarin instead).

  1. Hello! When I post the 'so famous' chinese motto 没有共产党就没有新红星 to Shanghainese, the output appears as: ḿ-meq g’ong tsae 黨zyiéu ḿ-meq shìn h’óng shin. I mean, one of the characters is not romanized. It happens if using either traditional or simplified chinese.
